There's not much positive to write about these days.

Sarah decides to resign as governor and the left goes into full attack mode, so fearful are that she might be running for president.

It is shameful what America has done to that woman and her family. We know more about the birth and parentage of Trig Palin than we do of B-HO's nationality.

Where are the conservative voices, then ones that will drive the debate, the ones that will make the Liberals go into defense mode?

Sadly missing.

Conservatives are busy with jobs and businesses and the pursuit of happiness.

Liberals are busy with building political power, finding offense at innocuous slights, and outrage at government granted rights that are as easily created as they are denied.

The Republic is in jeopardy.

Words tremble on my lips and emotions swell in my heart in my attempt
to humbly thank you for all the things you do to protect America and
the world. Words cannot express my depth of gratitude to your service,
to your sacrifice, to all that you leave behind to go forth into the
world and protect America’s interests around the globe.

Let my grateful tears thank you for the nights you slept freezing in a
tent or sweating in the desert, for the lonely days you spent missing
your loved ones, for the hours you spent sick in pain and without
someone holding your hand, for the moments of sheer fright in the
heart of battle, for the wounds you have suffered fighting evil, for
the endless days in hospitals undergoing painful surgeries, for the
precious occasions you have missed back at home. For all of these
sacrifices I thank you on behalf of millions of Americans who are so
grateful for you. We truly appreciate these sacrifices.

A special thank-you is in order to your families, to the parents who
raised you and made you be the man or woman you are today. I thank
your wives, husbands, and your loved ones who stand by you and support
you with their love and dedication.

And for those who returned in eternal sleep, may your legacy be
honored for generations to come, may the tears shed over your coffins
fertilize the fields of patriotism in our nation to raise a new
generation built on strength and honor, able and willing to follow in
your footsteps when duty calls to defend America. May your blood not
have been shed in vain. May we prove worthy of your sacrifice. May we
always honor your parents so they will always know that they are the
parents of an American hero.

You are our brave ones, our heroes, and our national treasures. You
are the pride of our nation, our strength and our foundation. Thanks
to you, millions have been freed around the world. Thanks to you,
those who criticize our country, burn our precious flag, and speak ill
of you, are able to do so because their freedom is built upon your
blood and your sacrifice.

I salute you one and all. I bow before you in respect and humility.

Arrogant Americans, Mr. President?

As I was sitting in church waiting for the start of the service, my
grandpa came walking towards me pointing his finger. No matter how old I
get, and no matter how long he’s been out of the U.S. Navy, that’s still an
intimidating sight. As he approached me, his voice quivered as he said, “We
saved that continent twice...how dare my president apologize for this
country’s arrogance.” My grandpa is right. Americans need not apologize to
the world for their arrogance; rather, Americans should apologize to their
forefathers for the arrogance of their president.
Barack Obama’s first foreign trip as President of the United 0A States has
confirmed the naiveté so many of us feared during the election cycle. But
worse than that, it has also demonstrated that our president suffers from
either a complete misunderstanding of our heritage and history, or an utter
contempt for it. Neither is excusable.
Garnering cheers from the French of all people, President Obama declared,
“In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the
world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with
you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown
arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” Consider that Obama spoke
these words just 500 miles from the beaches of Normandy, where the sand is
still stained with 65-year-old blood of “arrogant Americans.”
Indeed, columnist Mark Whittington observes, “One should remind Mr. Obama
and the Europeans how America has ‘shown arrogance’ by saving Europe from
itself innumerable times20in the 20th Century. World War I, World War II,
the Cold War, and the wars in the Balkans were largely resolved by American
blood, treasure, and leadership.” But all that appears lost on the president’s
seemingly insatiable quest to mend fences he imagines have been tarnished by
the bullish George W. Bush.
If Obama wishes to continue trampling the presidential tradition of
showing class to former office holders and publicly trash Bush for his own
personal gain, so be it. But all Americans should make clear that no man –
even if he is the president – will tarnish the legacy of those Americans who
have gone before us. Ours is not a history of arrogance. It is a history of
courage, self-sacrifice, and honor.
When abusive monarchs repressed the masses, Americans resisted and
overthrew them. When misguided policies led to the unjust oppression of
fellow citizens, Americans rebelled and overturned them. When millions of
impoverished and destitute wretches sought a new beginning, Americans threw
open the door and welcomed them. When imperial dictators were on the ma rch,
Americans surrendered their lives to stop them. When communist thugs
threatened world peace, Americans bled to defeat them. When an entire
continent was overwhelmed with famine and hunger, Americans gave of
themselves to sustain it. When terrorist madmen killed the innocent and
subjugated millions, Americans led the fight to topple them.
This is the legacy that generations of Americans have left. If President
Obama seeks stronger relations with the world community, perhaps he should
begin by reminding them of these very truths, rather than condemning his own
countrymen on foreign shores.
This “obsessive need to put down his own country,” has caused blogger
James Lewis to call President Obama a “stunningly ignorant man” who has
evidently never spoken to a concentration camp survivor, a Cuban refugee, a
boat person from Vietnam, a Soviet dissident, or a survivor of Mao’s purges.
Unfortunately, I can no longer bring20myself to give Mr. Obama that
benefit of the doubt. Not after looking at the pain in my grandpa’s eyes...a
man who still carries shrapnel in his body from his service to this country.
As a student and teacher of history, I recognize that America has made
mistakes...plenty of them, in fact. But one of the great things about our
people has been their courage and humility in admitting and correcting those
mistakes. God willing, they will prove that willingness again in four years
and correct the mistake that is the presidency of Barack Obama.

This letter was sent to the Wall Street Journal on August 8, 2008 by Alisa Wilson, Ph.D. Of Beverly Hills , CA . in response to the Wall Street Journal article titled "Where's The Outrage?" that appeared July 31,2008.

Really, I can tell you where the outrage is. The outrage is here, in this middle-aged, well-educated, upper-middle class woman. The outrage is here, but I have no representation, no voice. The outrage is here, but no one is listening for who am I?

I am not a billionaire like George Soros that can fund an entire political movement.

I am not a celebrity like Barbra Streisand that can garner the attention of the press to promote political candidates.

I am not a film maker like Michael Moore or Al Gore that can deliver misleading movies to the public.

The outrage is here, but unlike those with money or power, I don't know how to reach those who feel similarly in order to effect change.

Why am I outraged? I am outraged that my country, the United States of America , is in a state of moral and ethical decline. There is no right or wrong anymore, just what's fair.

Is it fair that millions of Americans who overreached and borrowed more than they could afford are now being bailed out by the government and lending institutions to stave off foreclosure? Why shouldn't these people be made to pay the consequences for their poor judgment?

When my husband and I purchased our home, we were careful to purchase only what we could afford. Believe me, there are much larger, much nicer homes that I would have loved to have purchased. But, taking responsibility for my behavior and my life, I went with the house that we could afford, not the house that we could not afford. The notion of personal responsibility has all but died in our country.

I am outraged, that the country that welcomed my mother as an immigrant from Hitler's Nazi Germany and required that she and her family learn English now allows itself to be overrun with illegal immigrants and worse, caters to those illegal immigrants.

I am outraged that my hard-earned taxes help support those here illegally. That the Los Angeles Public School District is in such disarray that I felt it incumbent to send my child to private school, that every time I go to the ATM, I see "do you want to continue in English or Spanish?", that every time I call the bank, the phone company , or similar business, I hear "press 1 for English or press 2 for Spanish". WHY? This is America , our common language is English and attempts to promote a bi- or multi-lingual society are sure to fail and to marginalize those who cannot communicate in English.

I am outraged at our country's weakness in the face of new threats on American traditions from Muslims. Just this week, Tyson's Food negotiated with its union to permit Muslims to have Eid-al-Fitr as a holiday instead of Labor Day. What am I missing? Yes, there is a large Somali Muslim population working at the Tyson's plant in Tennessee. Tennessee , last I checked, is still part of the United States. If Muslims want to live and work here they should be required to live and work by our American Laws and not impose their will on our long history.

In the same week, Random House announced that they had indefinitely delayed the publication of The Jewel of Medina, by Sherry Jones, a book about the life of Mohammed's wife, Aisha due to fear of retribution and violence by Muslims. When did we become a nation ruled by fear of what other immigrant groups want? It makes me so sad to see large corporations cave rather than stand proudly on the principles that built this country.

I am outraged because appeasement has never worked as a political policy, yet appeasing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is exactly what we are trying to do. An excellent article, also published recently in the Wall Street Journal, went through over 20 years of history and why talking with Iran has been and will continue to be ineffective. Yet talk, with a madman no less, we continue to do. Have we so lost our moral compass and its ability to detect evil that we will not go in and destroy Iran's nuclear program? Would we rather wait for another Holocaust for the Jews - one which they would be unlikely to survive? When does it end?

As if the battle for good and evil isn't enough, now come the Environmentalists who are so afraid of global warming that they want to put a Bag tax on grocery bags in California; to eliminate Mylar balloons; to establish something as insidious as the recycle police in San Francisco. I do my share for the environment: I recycle, I use water wisely, I installed an energy efficient air conditioning unit. But when and where does the lunacy stop? Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the map, the California economy is being overrun by illegal immigrants, and the United States of America no longer knows right from wrong, good from evil. So what does California do? Tax grocery bags.

So, America , although I can tell you where the outrage is, this one middle-aged, well-educated, upper middle class woman is powerless to do anything about it. I don't even feel like my vote counts because I am so outnumbered by those who disagree with me.

Obama's Foreign Failures

AMERICA'S enemies smell blood and it's type "O."

All new administrations stumble a bit as they seek their footing. But President Obama's foreign-policy botches have set new records for instant incompetence.

Contrary to left-wing myths, I wasn't a fan of the Bush administration. (I called for Donald Rumsfeld to get the boot in mid-2001.) But fair's fair. Despite his many faults, Bush sought to do good. Obama just wants to look good.

Vice President Dick Cheney was arrogant. Vice President Joe Biden is arrogant and stupid. Take your pick.

Don't worry about the new administration's ideology. Worry about its terrifying naivete.

Consider a sampling of the goofs O and his crew have made in just two months:

China: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (you know that gal married to the Saudi hireling) crawled to Beijing to tell the party bosses that human rights don't matter. Our "relationship" is more important than freedom and human dignity.

Beijing's response? A staged military confrontation with an unarmed US Navy vessel; continued screw-America currency cheating; a renewed crackdown on dissidents and, yesterday, a call for a new global currency to replace the dollar.

Thanks, Hill. You're a sweetheart.

Pakistan: With viral corruption throughout and Islamist fanatics sweeping half of its territory, Pakistan's coming apart. Its Dem-adored prez tries to ban opposition parties and gut the judiciary. It has nukes and seethes with hatred of America. And Islamabad controls our primary supply route into Afghanistan, using it as an extortion tool.

Obama's response? Billions in new aid for Pak pols to pocket. We'd be better off handing the money to AIG to pay out more bonuses.

Afghanistan: Obama's Vietnam. Am I the only American who remembers that candidate Obama had a plan to capture Osama bin Laden and fix our previous "mistakes" in Afghanistan? President Obama doesn't have a clue.

Iran: Obama tried to reach out, to talk. After all, talking got him to the White House. But America-bashing is what keeps Iran's leaders in office, it's their political essence. After 30 years of fierce hostility, hasn't anyone figured out that the senior mullahs need us as an enemy? Without the Great Satan America to blame, they'd have some real explaining to do to their homies. So O got the left-hand finger.

He wanted to chat with the Taliban, too. They told him he could stick it where the sun don't shine.

North Korea: Obama wanted a fresh start. North Korea's response? Threats of war with South Korea and the kidnapping of two American journalists. And the renewed pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, along with rocket tests.

Cuba: Obama would like to liberalize our relationship. The Castro boys told him to kiss off. They need an enemy, too. (Dear Mr. President: It's not always about us or how evil America is.)

Venezuela: Guess who else needs an enemy?

Mexico: The good news: Obama knows where it is on a map and recognizes that Mexico's government faces a narco-insurgency that threatens our country, too. His first action? Cave to the Teamsters, violate a lawful treaty on cross-border trucking, reignite fading anti-Americanism and undercut President Felipe Calderon.

Poland: Obama's stance on our bravest ally on the European continent? The Russians are more important than you are. He's sending the same message to Ukraine and Georgia.

Russia: Bolshie Biden, the commuting commissar, knows he's the man who can turn Russia into our best pal. After "Friend of Bill" Strobe Talbott tried and failed disastrously. And after poor W saw into Putin's soul, only to get his butt handed to him. "Uncle Joe" Biden has nothing to learn from past failures, though: He's got a re-set button.

Moscow's response to the Obama administration's bid for a new start? It threatens NATO members it once occupied and continues to back Iran's nuclear program. Plus, it bribes Kyrgystan to kick us off the critical-to-Afghanistan Manas airbase (then offers to help replace that supply lifeline, giving Russia a choke-hold on our troops).

Next, the Kremlin threatens massive re-armament and demands the abandonment of the dollar as the international reserve currency.

Obama's response? Push that re-set button again. And again.

At what point does naivete become cowardice?

As for our allies, Obama apparently needs them less than Bush did. O treated Britain's prime minister like the deputy Paraguayan veterinary inspector, and he blindsided the leaders of the Czech Republic, Poland, Mexico and Canada on issues ranging from missile defense to trade. But he'd like them to take the Gitmo terrorists off our hands, please.

The one bright spot thus far has been Iraq, where Obama quickly tossed aside his campaign promises. The O-man doesn't want to be on the blame-line for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in Baghdad. And his MoveOn.org supporters can throw all the tantrums they want. (Breaking news, folks: O's a professional pol, not the messiah . . . )

Apart from Iraq a success Sen. Obama did all he could to prevent his foreign policy's an instant wasteland. By comparison, the Carter administration is starting to look like a model of manly strength, courage and patriotism.

A point of view

I approached the entrance to Fort Belvoir’s medical facility last year
as an old veteran puttered towards me. Easily over 80 years old,
stooped and slow, I barely gave him a second glance because on his
heels was a full bird colonel.

As they approached, I rendered a sharp salute and barked, “Good
morning, Sir!” Because they were heel to toe, I began my salute as
the old veteran was about two paces from me. He immediately came to
life!

Transformed by my greeting, he rose to his full height, returned my
salute with pride, and exclaimed, “Good morning Captain!” I was
startled, but the full bird behind him was flabbergasted. The
colonel stopped mid-salute, smiled at me and quietly moved on.

As I entered the clinic, the utter beauty of the encounter preoccupied
me. What prompted the old man to assume that I was saluting him.
Perhaps he just thought, “It’s about time!” After all, doesn't a
veteran outrank us all? I turned my attention to the waiting room
taking a moment to survey the veterans there. Service people rushed
around, loudspeakers blared, the bell for the prescription window kept
ringing. It was a whirl of activity and the older veterans sat
quietly on the outside seemingly out of step, patiently waiting to be
seen. Nobody was seeing.

My old friend stayed on my mind. I began to pay attention to the
military’s attitude towards its veterans. I witnessed indifference:
Impatient soldiers and airmen plowing over little old ladies at the
commissary; I noticed my own agitation as an older couple cornered me
at the Officer’s Club and began reminiscing about their tour in
Germany.

To our disgrace, I have also witnessed disdain: At Ramstein Air Base
terminal, an airman was condescending and borderline cruel with a deaf
veteran flying Space Available; An ancient woman wearing a WACS button
was shoved aside by a cadet at the Women’s Memorial dedication in
D.C.; A member of the color guard turned away in disgust from a drunk
Vietnam vet trying to talk to him before the Veteran’s Day Ceremony at
the Vietnam War Memorial.

Have you been to a ceremony at the Wall lately? How about a Veteran’s
Day parade in a small town? The crowds are growing faint. Why do we
expect the general public to care if we don't? We are getting
comfortable again.

It is not my intention to minimize the selfless service of our modern
military; my comrades are the greatest people I know. But lately I'm
wondering if the public’s attitude towards the military isn't just a
reflection of the active duty military’s attitude towards its own
veterans.

It’s time to ask -- do we regard them, do we consider them at all?
How does our attitude change when the hero is no longer wearing a
uniform?

I was proud to wear my uniform. Can I admit that I thought it was
cool? There is no denying that there is something about our
profession, combined with youth, that feeds the ego a little.

We have all seen a young pilot strut into the Officer’s Club with his
flight suit on. He matters; he takes on the room; he knows he can
take on the world. But, one day he will leave his jet for a desk, and
eventually he will have to hang up that flight suit. A super hero
hanging up his cape. How will we measure his value then? He will no
longer look like a pilot, an officer, a colonel. He'll just look like
an old man coming out of the clinic with his prescription.

But, he is he less of a hero? Will anybody remember or care about all
the months he spent away from his newborn daughter while making peace
a possibility in the Balkans? Probably not.

Our society has a short memory. Maybe it is not for the protected to
understand. Rather, it is my hope that when a young lieutenant walks
by him they will each see themselves reflected in the other – one’s
future, the other’s past. In that moment, perhaps, the lieutenant
will also see the hero, now disguised as an old man, and thank him.

The truth is there are heroes in disguise everywhere. I used to
wonder why people would want to chat with me when I was in uniform,
telling me about their four years as a radio operator in Korea. So
what? I wasn't impressed relative to my own experiences. Now I
understand that they were telling me because nobody else cared. Proud
of their service, no matter how limited, and still in love with our
country, they were trying to stay connected. Their stories were a
code for “I understand and appreciate you, can you appreciate me?”
The answer is yes.

I separated from the military in February. I'm out of the club.
Still, I want you to know that I'll attend the parades, visit the
memorials, and honor you while my kids and your kids are watching.

Then, maybe someday when I'm an old woman riding the metro, a young
airman will take a moment of her time to listen to one of my war
stories. I, in turn, will soak in her beauty and strength, and
remember.

Today as I reflect on my adventures in the Air Force, I'm thinking of
that ancient warrior I collided with at Fort Belvoir. I'm wondering
where he is, if he’s still alive, if it’s too late to thank him. I
want to start a campaign in his honor – Salute a Veteran. Yes, this
started out as a misunderstanding on my part. But, now I get it.
That day was the first time in my life that I really understood what
it meant to salute someone.

Dear veteran, I recognize and hail you! I do understand what I have
and what you have given to make it possible. So I'm wondering if we
meet on the street again…may I salute you?

The American people elect a radical president with a total of 42 days experience as a U S Senator from the most politically corrupt state in America whose governor is ousted from office. Eighteen states are currently being investigated for massive voter fraud. Obama has still never produced a legal (long form) birth certificate to prove that he is a "natural born" citizen and eligible for the office of President.

Here's a recap of his first two weeks...

1, The President's first "official act" was to close Gitmo and make sure Terrorists civil rights are not violated.

2, The U.S. Congress rushes to confirm his Attorney General nominee, Eric Holder, whose law firm we later find out represents seventeen GitmoTerrorists.

3, Appoints a CIA Boss, Leon Panetta, who has absolutely no experience to qualify him for the job.

3. We get the most corrupt female in America as Secretary of State; bought and paid for.

5. We got a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary who files his own taxes and had to pay $37,000 in unpaid back taxes due to IRS findings of errors and omissions..

6. A Commerce Secretary nominee who withdrew due to corruption charges.

7. A Tax cheat nominee for Chief Performance Officer who withdrew under charges.

8. A Labor Sec'y nominee who withdrew under charges of unethical conduct.

9. A Sec'y HHS nominee who withdrew under charges of cheating on his taxes.

And that's just the first two weeks . . . but who's counting. America is being run by the modern-day Three Stooges ~ Barack, Nancy , and Harry ~ and they are still trying to define the stimulus.

(Perhaps, "Stimulus is where the government gives a smidgen of your tax dollars back to you making you feel so good about yourself [stimulated] that you want to run out to Wal-Mart and buy a new Chinese-made HDTV and go home and watch Crescent News Network!)

OK, it should be about $300 per year.

It's not? Why? Because if you get injured in an accident the health care costs are so high? No that's not it.

Because car repairs are so spendy, and if it's you're fault, it's twice as much (not to mention what it would be if you smack a Lexus - YOW)? No that's not it either.

It's because the Trial Lawyers want the right to sue when there's an accident.

That's right, the premiums you pay just go to pad the ins companies' law suit fund, because no matter how much they pay out, they're going to be sued. Even if they win, the cost of the law suit is astronomical. Your premiums don't really protect you at all. If you cause an accident that hurts someone, you and your insurance company (because they are the deep pockets party) are going to be sued.

Why bring this up now? Well, if states would pass no fault insurance, and limit law suit payouts, your insurance premiums would be about $300 $400 per year.

Do the math, would you spend the extra money, oh I don't know, buying a new car, TV, or BluRay player?

Leaving 15 million to do the work. 2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden. Which leaves 12.2 million to do the work. Take from that total the 10.8 million people who work for state and city Governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to d o the work. At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals. You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well.........

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

Any discussion of evolution is incomplete without a link to the origin of all things, The Big Bang. Yet, when I discuss evolution with agnostics and atheists they avoid the link, dismissing it as irrelevant, an ignorant non-sequiter, and instead try to steer the conversation back to debates over the meaning of "theory" as in "Theory" of Evolution, and the processes behind the scientific method.

Never mind, that the scientific method has yet to replicate the creation of a single living entity, not even one as simple as an amoeba, nor shown a way for a creature, say the whale, to have evolved from a sea organism, to a land organism (which is what they claim), back to a sea organism in any scientific way. They just say it happened, there's a fossil somewhere that proves that whales and hippos are related to the same common ancestor.

Well, ok, even if true, how did it all start? The fact there was once nothing, and then boom, the Big Bang and this whole marvelous universe with order and science behind if sprang into being is unexplainable by science, method or otherwise.

Christmas Greeting

Yesterday, a clerk, a young man, working the register at the Walgreens in my neighborhood said he would wish me a Merry Christmas, but he was fearful of doing so, because it might offend those who are not Christian.

How odd, to be afraid to wish someone well which is really what the message is all about.

I told him he should go ahead and do it. Anyone who would be offended by the wish would have to be pretty hateful, and needs the blessings offered by all who would do so.

My Christmas wish, is that we all continue to offer such a greeting, and make sure that the world does not forget that Christ's birth is the reason for the season.

First of all, let's take a perfectly good word back.

I can't sing "now we don our gay apparel" without feeling a twinge of slimy-ness. Why did we let "gay" mean homosexual? Because the term homosexual is awful, even though it perfectly describes what 'gay' people are. Why don't they want to use that? Why'd they have to take such a happy word and make it mean something sexual, stealing it from common lexicon?

I just listened to some homosexual on Hardball telling me that 'gay' people are the real uniters of the world as born out by history. Really? How so? By changing the meaning of words? By teaching children that two mommies or two daddies is ok and natural, in spite of all evidence to the contrary?

He also demanded that Rick Warren convene a sit down with the National Gay and Lesbian/Transgendered/NAMBLA/Crossdresser/Necrophiliac leadership and talk with them.

Why should he do that? So the aforementioned group can get him to say the bible is wrong, or that he has misinterpreted the bible? Maybe they want him to say homosexual marriage is ok.

But is it? Marriage is a religious term. It has always meant the uniting of man and woman. Homos live outside this religious term, but they want to force religions to redefine what marriage means. Where's the ACLU? Homos living in a committed relationship have all the same legal rights that married people have, but the right to call themselves married. They want to force a secular definition of marriage on religious people - in effect causing government to intrude on religious beliefs. Doesn't this violate their precious construct of the separation of church and state.

I'm not a Rick Warren fan, but I hope he tells them to go to hell.

Given the leftward lurch of the nation's leadership, and the whiny laments of the city dwellers when W won, I wonder if this country isn't too fractured to continue in its present form.

If we read the Declaration of Independence, it seems like we are obligated to tear this broken system down and start over (think it ain't broken? Did you see the video on How Obama got elected? Can you say, "Senator Stuart Smalley"?).

An independent Texas sounds like a great place to live. I have heard rumors that Cascadia (Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, and BC) is already on paper, a shadow government in waiting.

Trouble is, if we tear it down, where would we get the visionary leaders needed to rebuild? Leaders who are willing to risk their lives and their fortunes for an enterprise that would brand them traitors?

Flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the back story.

I started this company 12 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300

Square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was

Converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building

A company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent

Went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a

Defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I

Stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and

Partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work,

Discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a

Modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy

Cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes.

Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I

Was trolling through the Goodwill store extracting any clothing item

That didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced

Their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put

My time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that

Eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my

Friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in

At about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button

For me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend

All to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and

Breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is

No weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached

To my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only

See the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the

Vacations... You never realize the back story and the sacrifices I've

Made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right

Decisions and saved his money, have to bail-out all the people who

Didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled

To the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life

For.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep

And not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is

Starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell

You why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough.

I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes.

Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on

Taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess

What? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and

Regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of

My time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000

For quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero. Nada.

Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy

Who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000

people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother

sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next

welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic

stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit

and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who

wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which

is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy

you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government

mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of

depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have

spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic

growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in

the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't

defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to

life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the

heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate

it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the

mud of America are the essential drivers of the American economic

engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of

change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be

swift and simple. I fire you. I fire your co-workers. You can then plead

with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's

future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and

retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the

productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to

provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

While tax cuts to 95% of America sounds great on paper, don't forget the

backstory: If there is no job, there is no income to tax. A tax cut on

zero dollars is zero

So, when you make decision to vote, ask yourself, who understands the

economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will

endanger your job?

Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable

of saving your job. While the media wants to tell you "It's the economy

stupid" I'm telling you it isn't.

If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will

be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this

country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its

landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me in South Caribbean

sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about.

My computer screen is unresponsive. I scream at it constantly: "Wake Up, Dammit! The election is a hoax perpetrated by government!", but it doesn't hear me, it doesn't respond, it just keeps showing me the evidence, voter registrations, poll results that are so obviously fake that not even Goofy in a Disney cartoon would be able to miss it.

The Dems are planning a super majority in Congress, B-HO's 'transition' team is already meeting, the media are reporting that it will be a B-HO landslide. How do they know that?

Fraud.

When I first got the right to vote, you had to be 21. You had to register well in advance of the PRIMARY election (you couldn't vote in the General otherwise), you had to show your registration card at the polling place, only military and certain citizens living abroad could vote absentee, and the ballot had to be cast within days of the actual election date, note months before hand.

It isn't ACORN that is responsible for this, it's government, government that abets fraud, and we, my friends are the losers. No matter who wins next month, he will be bathed in the stink of fraud, and no election can ever be considered fair until we the people get control over the voter registration process once again.

All those of you who think B HUSSEIN is having it both ways in his 'support' for the troops by saying he's going to end the war immediately, but will cover the withdrawal with troops to make sure the withdrawing troops are safe, are forgetting Slick Willy and Kosovo.

Those of you with memories long enough to have been paying attention during the glory days of the Clintonistas, will recall that Der Schlimeister had to sen peace keepers over there but promised to bring them home by Christmas.

I'm sure you remember that, Law and Order had several episodes covering the behavior of those blood thirsty bastards on both sides of that little dust up - our guys and their guys.

Do you remember that Slick Willy made good on his promise to bring the troops he sent over there home by Christmas? He did you know. All the troops he promised he'd bring home by Christmas did come home by Christmas.

Of course Kosovo was still a dangerous place, and precipitously withdrawing our blood thirsty, I mean, peace keeping troops would expose them to un necessary danger.

So Slick Willy made sure those troops could come home safely. He sent another set of troops, ok, a one for one replacement set of troops, to Kosovo to cover the safe withdrawal of the troops he brought home for Christmas.

I think those troops are still there.

Watch B Hussein do the same thing in Iraq, if he wins....

Rattle Snake Etiquette

I enjoy a good hard run. I have always maintained that it will cure a cold, the flu, whooping cough, Liberalism, and many other common maladies.

Sick? Go for a good hard run. A good run of five or so miles gets the old heart rate up and flushes your system of toxins more quickly than a bike ride, unless the bike ride is a six per cent six mile climb at 3,000 feet. When you get oxygen debt, you get close to God, which in itself is therapeutic.

Trouble is, a bike ride takes time if you don't have a life sucking mountain near by. I have no time, and no life sucking mountain.

So I do the good hard run when I am sick, or when I need an attitude adjustment.

Around here in the South OC, there is a great trail that runs from Cook's Corner in the foot hills to the Top of The World on the coast. I run or ride parts of it at least three times a week.

There are side benefits to running the trail. Little blessings from God, I call them. The first time I ran it, I saw an odd looking dog jogging down the trail ahead of me. It had a short tail and orange and black fur. When it ducked off the train and into the brush, I realized it was a bobcat, not a dog. Funny, though, how its gait was just like a dog's.

Another time, I rounded a curve and came across a red tailed hawk, wings spread, feinting at a coiled rattler. The hawk no doubt was timing the snake's strikes, and would hit it on a recoil when it got the timing right.

Trouble is, I was already in both animals' fight or flight zone. The hawk took off, the snake uncoiled and slithered into the brush, and I cursed my lack of a helmet cam.

One little blessing I always enjoy, I mean besides the murders of crows, the buzzards overhead, and the rabbits and squirrels running for cover every few yards, is the mothers and fathers I see jogging with the strollers that are holding their babies. OK, I enjoy seeing the mothers more than the fathers, but what says 'daddy' more than a father willing to take a baby for a jog?

My last run there, I started around 0730 to avoid the social riders and runners who think the paved two lane trail is there so they can run or ride 47 abreast and scare the hell out of solo runners who they meet on curves. I don't know why there aren't more head on crashes. Anyway, I run about a quarter mile on the paved trail, then take a dirt path that circles down by the creek and up over a hump that must be 30 or 40 yards of 11% or 12% grade. I was coming up on the dirt trail when I came upon one of the treats God always has for me.

There was a young woman jogging behind her stroller and she had a dog running with her, a double blessing. I passed her just as the dirt trail came up and as I ran up the little hill at the trail's start I heard some, I don't know, was it yelling? behind me.

I didn't think anyone would be hailing me, more likely it was a group carrying on as if they were driving with a cell phone at their ears, so I kept on.

The dirt trail runs parallel to Aliso Creek, then loops around and ends up rejoining the paved trail at its far end. I always take the paved trail back, using it more as a cool down run than the more rigorous dirt trail. About half way back to the start, I again came across the mom with babe and dog.

As I passed her, I again heard something, only this time I could make out "Rattlesnake" as one of the words. I turned around and could tell it was the woman, and since no one else was around, I figured she was talking to me.

"Pardon?" I said.

"You took the snake trail," she said. "I used to go that way, but I saw way too many snakes."

No wonder she ran with the dog.

"Did you see any?" she said.

"No," I said, "Not today. But, you shouldn't be afraid of them. They are way more afraid of you than you are of them. Besides, you probably saw corn snakes rather than rattlers," I told her. "Look for their tracks. The rattler makes a very pronounced 'S' trail, the corn snake's track is a lazy 'S', more like a slight squiggle in a line than an 'S'."

"Are corn snakes dangerous?" she asked.

"Naw, no poison, and they eat rattlers.... So, well, don't let them keep you from a good jog," I said.

"OK, thanks," she said. "I didn't know all that."

"Oh, you're welcome," I said. "God bless you for being a mom and taking your baby with you. Have a great run."

I took off again, a little faster, a little more energetic.

Personally, I think I got the blessing.....

Slaves To The Tax Man

Here's something I've been saying for years, just not as well.

From Walter E. Williams, one of my favorite economists, via Town Hall:

Let's do a thought experiment asking whether Americans are for or against slavery. You might say, "What are you talking about, Williams? We fought a war that cost over 600,000 lives to end slavery!" To get started, we might find a description that captures the essence of slavery. A good working description is: slavery is a set of circumstances whereby one person is forcibly used to serve the purposes of another person and has no legal claim to the fruits of his labor.

The average American worker toils from January 1st to the end of April, and has no legal claim to the fruits of his labor for that period. Federal, state and local governments, through the tax code, take what he produces. A small portion of the fruits of his labor is used to provide for the constitutional functions of government. Most of what's taken, up to two-thirds, is given to some other American in the forms of farm and business subsidies, Social Security, Medicare, welfare and hundreds of other government handout programs. As in slavery, one person is being forcibly used to serve the purposes of another person.

You might ask, "Williams, aren't you a bit off base? Slavery means that you are owned by another person." Who owns a person is not nearly important as who has the rights to use that person. In other words, a plantation owner having the power to force a black to work for him would have been just as well off, and possibly better off, not owning him. Not owning him means not having to bear medical expenses and loss of wealth if the slave died. During World War II, Nazis didn't own Jews, but they had the power to force them to labor for them. Not owning Jews meant that working and starving them to death had little cost to the Nazis. The fact that American slaves were owned, with prices sometimes ranging from $800 to $1,300, meant that owners had a financial stake in the slave's well-being and they were not worked and starved to death.

You might argue that my analogy is irrelevant because unlike American slaves and Nazi concentration camp inmates, we can come and go as we please, live where we want, buy a car, clothes and other things with the money left over after the government gets four months' worth of our earnings. But, does that make much of a difference?

During slavery, visitors to the South often observed "a great many loose negroes about." Officials in Savannah, Mobile and Charleston and other cities complained about "nominal slaves," "virtually free negroes," and "quasi free negroes" who were seemingly oblivious to any law or regulation. Frederick Douglass, a slave, explained this phenomenon when he was employed as a Baltimore ship's caulker: "I was to be allowed all my time; to make bargains for work; to find my own employment, and to collect my own wages; and in return for this liberty, I was … to pay him (Douglass' master) three dollars at the end of each week, and to board and clothe myself, and buy my own caulking tools."

There are some benefits to being a quasi free person such as Frederick Douglass. There are two ways U.S. Congress might force me to serve the purposes of another American. They might force me spend a couple of hours each day actually working, without compensation, for another American. Or, they might forcibly take a portion of my earnings so that American can hire someone. I see myself as being better off with Congress doing the latter -- taking a portion of my earnings and giving it away.

Some might be put off by my thought experiment and consider it an illegitimate use of the term "slavery." At what point should we consider ourselves a quasi free American -- when government takes two-thirds or three-quarters of our earnings?

Carrier v. BB Rules Of The Road

Reminds me of an incident we had while I was on the USS New Jersey.

We were conducting ops in the SoCal OpArea when we suffered a steering and engineering casualty. The battleship when under full steam (eight burning and four turning) is quite manuverable and quick (over 40 kts at flank), but down to one boiler, one screw, and one rudder, we are worse than a garbage scow.

We sent out the mandatory NOTEMs saying that we were limited to bare steerageway when one of the carriers out there with us, came up to flank, turned into the wind, CBDR - Constant Bearing, Decreasing Range (collision course) - with us and told us to get out of their way, they were going to flight ops and we were the burdened vessel.

Our CIC sent them a msg to check the NOTEM, to which they reminded us of the Rules of the Road governing carriers lauching or recovering air craft.

Ahem.

The Jersey's OOD got on the bridge to bridge radio with the carrier's OOD. "Kitty Hawk, this is New Jersey, you are CBDR with a 68,000 ton class A armored battleship. We are unable to comply, so unless you want the bow of your carrier to be shoved into your bridge, I suggest you change course - IMMEDIATELY!"

The carrier suspended flight ops and moved 100 nautical miles away from us before coming up to flight ops again.

BB v. Carrier Pt II

Ops briefed the skipper on their plan while Sam crawled into his rack and got some sleep. Ops didn’t mention it was Sam’s idea, though he did say the LDOs contributed to the plan. No sense in condemning the lot of them to op’s planning meetings – they’d just cheat the nuggets out of an opportunity to learn by making fools of themselves in front of Flags.

The skipper added a few details and tasked Ops with writing the op order, which meant the Ops Department JOs would be tested.

Monday morning, 0300, T-Time minus five, the New Jersey was steaming northeast at a leisurely 10 knots, EMCOM Charlie set, and her topside lit up like Times Square. They were close enough to the Ranger CTF that the cans’ protecting her were painting a nice picture of their search and fire control radars for the Jersey’s spooks. From the ecm gear, it was easy to see the cans were all clustered around Ranger, nice targets for a Surface Launched Cruise Missile with a low yield nuke to take them all out in one launch.

Though New Jersey could do it, so could the missile ships in her task force, and that really wouldn’t prove the BB’s worth. No, Ranger would suffer a more painful, personal fate.

At 0500, she had closed to 30 nautical miles, close enough that Ranger’s ECM guys would be wondering about the Furuno and Decca 2100 radars sweeping around among the Sperrys and Ratheons on the fishing boats. Those were passenger boat radars, and though it was a commercial waterway, there wasn’t usually any cruise ships steaming that close to the op area. They made a report to the CIC Watch Officer, and logged the contact.

But then, the Ranger’s spooks suddenly had bigger fish to fry. They were catching an SPS-48 3D F/C Radar off in the east. And moments later, an SPG lit off. Missile ships, the Orange force! Two minutes was all it took and they had them vectored.

“Combat, ECM, we have racket, vampire fire control radar bearing 275 degrees .”

“Combat, Aye”.

A second later the CIC watch officer threw back the curtain to the ECM room and strode inside. “You got the Orange Force already?” he said.

“Looks like they lit off their fire control stuff, probably just testing it. The exercise doesn’t start for another hour,” said the ECM operator.

“Yah, but what a fuck up. They tipped their hand and gave away their position. We’ll have fast movers on them before they know what’s hit them.”

He looked at the WRL10’s display as if he knew what it meant. “That’s them, right?” he said pointing at the racket coming from the south.

“Yes Sir, that’s them,” said the ECMO.

The CIC officer made his report to the bridge, along with his recommendation that they dispatch the cans to the south to intercept the BB and her brood before they got too close. It didn’t occur to any of them that the BB’s signature was missing from the racket burst.

New Jersey was now on the horizon, and the Ranger’s look out could see her lights.

The New Jersey’s look outs could see the Ranger, too. Aircraft carriers don’t care about darken ship, the flight deck is a dangerous enough place without having to stagger around in the dark. She looked like a Christmas tree.

Jersey’s CO was already the 05 level main battery control station. The guns were manned, and optical fire control solutions were being inputed to the Mark 1 Able fire control computer. She could fire now, and inflict sufficient damage to put Ranger out of commission for a month or two.

But the plan was humiliation, not annihilation. They were to get closer, much closer.

At 15 nautical miles, T minus 30, the New Jersey’s signal bridge reported a signal from Ranger. “Bridge, Sigs, Ranger’s Alfa-ing us”.

“Bridge, aye. Stand by.” Sam looked at Ops and smiled. “So they don’t recognize us. Ha!” he said.

Ops hit the bitch box switch and said, “Sigs, Bridge, ignore the Alfa.”

“Sigs, aye.”

“Let’s see how long it takes them to use the Bridge to Bridge”, said Ops.

“My money’s on 10 miles,” said Sam.

Ops turned his binoculars on the Ranger. He had to hand it to their signalmen, they kept up the Alfa interrogative tirelessly.

12 nautical miles out, the bitch box from CIC crackled to life. “Bridge, Combat, Ranger’s calling on Pri Ci. They are asking us to ID ourselves.”

“Combat, Bridge, you have them on ‘Ignore’ right?” asked ops.

“Combat, that’s a Roger. ECM says we’re being painted, but not any shooter radars.”

“Very well. Let me know if any fire control radars come up.”

He turned to Sam, “So far so good.”

9.5 nautical miles, the Bridge to Bridge’s Motorola broke squelch briefly, then crackled to life.

“Vessel to my west, this is the US warship, USS Ranger. Identify yourself”.

Sam laughed, “Oh hell, not a ‘US Warship’! What will we do?”

Ops waited a full minute, then keying the mic on the Bridge to Bridge, “USS Ranger, this is SS Azure Seas, cruise ship of the Princess Line returning to San Pedro from Mazatlan.”

“SS Azure Seas, this is Ranger. We are conducting a military exercise in this area and may be changing course without notice to conduct flight quarters. Be advised, you will be the burdened vessel.”

“Flight quarters? Will you be launching air craft?” asked Ops. “Could we watch?”

“This is Ranger, you may, but please maintain 10,000 yards off our beam, and no closer than 5,000 yards off our stern.

“Welcome. Ranger, out.”

“Azure Seas out, thank you, our passengers will be so excited!”

The Captain’s circuit crackled to life. ”Like taking candy from a baby. How long till first light?”

“About 20 minutes before they’re able to see the guns,” said Ops.

“OK, let’s take station 5,000 yards off their stern. It’s a natural blind spot for them. Two minutes before first light, bring her up to flank speed and make our run up her starboard side, between her and the can. At COMEX I want to be blowing holes in her side.”

Sam took the con so Ops could coordinate the missile ship strike without worrying about rules of the road. He gave ruder orders to the master helmsman to take them slowly to Ranger’s stern.

It was now five minutes before first light, and 40 minutes to COMEX. The 5MC from sigs crackled to life, “Bridge, Signal Bridge, Ranger’s showing meat balls, she’s turning into the wind and going to flight quarters.”

“She’s cheating – getting ready to launch a strike against the missile ships at COMEX,” said Sam.

Ops punched the Gun Fire Control button. “Captain, OOD, recommend we execute the strike. The missile ships are in position, solutions plotted, on my word they’ll illuminate Ranger with incoming SLCM racket. Should cause the screen force to sortie, giving us our shot.”

“Good call, Ops. Make it happen, but mind the plane guard can”.

“Roger.”

“Sam, order up flank.”

In rapid order, OPS ordered the missile ships to ‘fire’ their cruise missiles. The radar signal from the simulator was immediately interpreted on Ranger as an anti ship missile launch from North and West, two totally unexpected directions due to the misdirection signals sent out first by the tin cans.

The Ranger came up to flank speed as she turned into the wind. The plane guard destroyer, in position off Ranger’s stern to rescue luckless aviators who couldn’t catch the wire and splashed moved into position while the rest of the screen split to move against the Orange Force threat.

New Jersey was moving up on the Ranger. She’d killed the deceptive lighting pattern, and went to EMCON ALFA, complete emission silence. No one was paying her any mind, she was in Ranger’s and the plane guard’s blind spots, and any radar that painted her would show her to be a fishing boat or other small craft – her rounded shapes, an inadvertent byproduct of the artistic craftsmanship of WWII builders, and low freeboard, gave her a stealth advantage modern designers were still working to attain in modern warships.

At 40 knots New Jersey was bouncing like a pogo stick. She wasn’t used to such speed, and the main shaft bearings weren’t cooperating. She was going to wipe a bearing. The Chief Engineer, the Ops O, and the captain all hoped it would happen after she sunk the Ranger. “Eight burning, four turning”, a good day for the blackshoe navy.

As Ranger steamed past the plane guard, the secret was out, but it was too late. The plane guard wasn’t at GQ, and even if she had been, her 5 inch gun wouldn’t slow the New Jersey down, and New Jersey was so close to her that the plane guard’s missiles wouldn’t even arm before striking the Jersey. The Ranger suspended flight quarters and took an evasive turn, but Jersey was on her like a cheetah on an antelope.

Try as she might, Ranger couldn’t shake the Jersey. New Jesey was too fast and too maneuverable com[ared to the lumbering carrier. The Jersey slowly came along Ranger’ s port side, just so the whole flight deck crew could see. Her nine 16 inch guns were aligned to her starboard and level with Ranger’s waterline. As Pri Ci announced, “Now commence FLEETEX 2-87” Ranger’s bridge to bridge was receiving a message from the “SS Azure Seas”, “Thank you for your hospitality, Ranger. Please enjoy your break from the action. Azure Seas out”. The Jersey gunners fired air slugs at Ranger for emphasis while the New Jersey’s signal bridge was flashing “Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf, Golf” signifying that New Jersey had fired her nine 16” guns into Ranger’s hull, a decidedly fatal attack as judged by CINCPACFLEET’s referees.

POSTEX:

New Jersey had ended the exercise before it started, and while it was a brilliant tactical victory, it wasn’t appreciated. The whole point of the exercise was to test Ranger and her battle group, not NJ.

CINCPAC sent New Jersey back to the Southern Edge of the SOCAL OPAREA, and reset the exercise clock.

Ranger had her CAP on station, and the airborn E-2C Hawkeyes were patrolling the outer perimeter of her layered defense zone. The screening cans were also dispersed, spreading the task force from horizon to horizon per the nuclear defense plan.

Of course, Ranger passed her ORE, with lessons learned. In the restarted exercise, the Orange Force was never a real threat. Though they attacked from missile strike distances, their positions had been noted and the minute they ‘launched’, Standard missiles and Sea Sparrow missiles knocked the incoming SLCMs out of the sky, and F/A 18s roared in on the tin cans and the BB pickleing Hellfire Missiles and LGBs, ‘sinking’ them repeatedly.

New Jersey was never again given an Orange Force role.

But she did get to participate in another carrier battle group’s ORE, as part of the battle group, with interesting results.

Lt Barlow needed a nap, just a short one would do. Sailors develop the ability to refresh themselves from the barest bit of shuteye from years of 25 hour days, three section watches, and the occasional trip ashore for liberty in an exotic port. He’d stood his four hour watch, done his Div O admin work, counseled his wayward sailors, now needed to sleep, just enough to get at least one REM cycle.

But the nap’d have to wait. The Captain had called an AOM for 1300. Some NAVEX was no doubt in the battleship’s future and Charlie Oscar would be giving them the straight scoop.

Sam dragged himself up to the wardroom for a cup of coffee. It was like walking around with wet cement hanging from every square inch of his body. And sand scratching his eyes. He’d go to sleep immediately if he could find a spot to crash, but it would be wrong to say he was sleepy. Bone weariness never feels sleepy.

At 1302, the XO announced “All rise” as the CO and MPOC strode into the wardroom. The assembled officers all rose in unison and stood at attention.

“As you were, Gents”, said the Captain. They all sat as the MPOC assumed parade rest at the Skipper’s left.

After some obligatory jokes about wardroom chow and the XO’s jogging skills – how could someone so slow pass the PFT? - the Captain got down to business.

“Gentlemen, we have a unique opportunity to highlight the Jersey’s capability. We have been assigned to sortie against the USS Ranger Battle Group as Orange Force flag. We’ll have two missile ships with us.

“It’s the Carrier Battle Group’s ORE for deployment, and while I have the utmost respect for the Task Group Commander, and wish him all the best, I am not about to let some hot jock in an F18 send us to the time out box.

“We are to ComEx is 0800 Monday morning and I want to be on station and ready to attack them at zero plus one. So we will go EMCOM Alpha at midnight tonight and steam to the eastern edge of the SOCAL Op area. I expect an attack plan by 0800 from each department. Be creative gents. They have rules, beyond not using live rounds, we do not.

“I have tasked the cans’ SOPA to work up an attack plan and present it at 1600 here. Ops O is coordinating our plan, the cans’ attack will be tangential to our own.

“They won’t take us lightly again. We’ll get together again at 2000.”

The XO rose and barked another, “Attention on Deck”. MPOC snapped to attention as the officers rose again. The CO and MPOC left the wardroom.

The XO rose and, said, “OK, Ops, bring me your plan by 1930.” He issued the usual edicts about beans, bullets, and gas and dismissed the officers, who all waited for their department heads to tell them to muster in their offices.

Lt Barlow didn’t need to be told. He took his coffee and headed up to the Ops office, as if his getting there first would somehow shorten the meeting.

The other officers in the Ops department straggled in, followed by the Ops O. The discussed the Ranger’s order of battle, the layered defense, the wicked Standard defense missile, the NATO Sea Sparrow, and the Marine Detachment’s little surprises, dual 5”50 mounts, 20mm AA guns, and their fifties. It wasn’t gonna be easy.

The Real Live Officers who gone to knife and fork school, not to mention some of America’s better institutions of higher education discussed attack plans, feints, high speed hit and runs, over the horizon SLCM attacks, sacrificing the small boys. Each had a favored plan and each lobbied hard to get his approved.

Sam and the other LDOs weren’t expected to participate, they were just overpaid enlisted pukes in the eyes of the other RLO JOs. But Sam needed his sleep, especially since he’d be the GQ JOOD for the whole attack. It moved him to speak.

“I gotta idea Ops. Lets dress this lady up and take her to a dance.”

The ops office fell silent, for an instant. “What the hell kind of plan is that?” asked the Ops O.

“Well, we’re at EMCOM Alpha right? Nothing to id us as a combatant, right? Why not go to EMCOM Charlie, rig deceptive lighting for a cruise ship, and sail right up on her before first light? As they are eating chow and briefing their flight crews, we come to flank speed and take out with guns. The main battery will put her to the bottom in a New York Second.”

The CIC officer said, “What about the missile ships? What do we do with them?”

Wily Strong, the ECM Officer, another LDO, said, “Missiles are high tech. They are countered with high tech. Doncha think the airdales will be looking hard for them? We can send them to the Southern edge of the OpArea while we steam West from the Southern edge. Let ‘em make some noise, the Wild Weasels will pick em up and distract them while we saunter on up on them. If their skippers are good, they can evade long enough for us to sneak up on the carrier.”

All the JOs looked at Ops. He was staring hard at Sam and Willy. There was a long silence before he said, “I like it.

“OK, Willy, get the lighting plan set up. Weather, get me a weather forecast for east and south OP Area. A Ops, gen up an opord for the cans to go ISE and attack Blue at will.

“Sam.

“You look like shit. Get some sleep. You and I are going to have a long day.”

During WWII, the Viet Minh built fortified tunnels on a small island off the coast of Viet Nam. They used it to shell Japanese ships. The VC used it to shell navy ships cutting donut holes in the ocean on North SAR and PIRAZ station. It was an annoyance, rather like a mosquito buzzing around. But, American airmen needed the advanced warning provided by the PIRAZ destroyer and the SAR assets at North SAR.

Not all missions north were successful, if the had been, the ordinance we dropped on NVN would have bombed them back to the stone age. When weather or some other mission cancelling event stopped an aircraft from dropping its load on target, they’d bring it back with them. That meant bombing Flipper or the island.

Tons of ordinance would be unloaded on the island.

To no avail.

Then one day, the VC fired on the New Jersey. Suffice it to say, that put an end to that island as a source of annoyance to the navy.

Another argument for the value of a capital ship that carries a big stick.

And tough luck for Flipper.

The Big Dog

For the projection of power ashore in a littoral conflict, nothing beats naval air. It gets there fast, and pounds the hell out of the enemy before he knows what hit him, and today’s navy has sophisticated electronics packages that puts ordinance right on target and causes SAMs to bite the hand that fed them.

Nice.

But what if your enemy is, say, a mujahedeen who don’t have a SAM system, and couldn’t use it if he did? Naval air still rules the battlefield, but a fifty cal machine gun shooting straight up into the air will rip the belly right out of a F/A 18 coming in hot to lay down ordinance in support of besieged grunts.

A 16” shell, on the other hand, is impervious to a puny 50 cal round. Even if it did somehow succumb to a low tech weapon, it wouldn’t have a pilot punching out to be caught by an enemy who would use him for political and propaganda purposes. Nor would it give up secrets like a downed Predator.

In political parlance, a 16” shell is as PC as you can get. It don’t care who it blows up, and it ain’t gonna roll on its brothers if it falls into the wrong hands.

Viet Nam, a political war as much as anything else. The generals and admirals running things all gambled on their service being the one that could whip the enemy better than any other service. In the navy, the conventional forces had little to impact. Sure, the brown water navy was there. Swifts and PBRs and LCUs, mikes and zippos all did their part, but there were no naval battles to win, no dramas on the high seas to write home about. That’s not to say that the SEALS didn’t do their part, but SEALS terrorizing some terrorist VC didn’t win big dollars in the defense budget sweepstakes.

Enter the New Jersey. Able to reach 90% of targets in North and South Viet Nam without coming within range of a shore battery, it was a beautiful thing in the surface navy’s thinking.

But not so fast. Airdales (only half a word in the black shoe world – brothers you know what I mean) were running the show.

New Jersey deployed to Viet Nam to support combat operations. North Viet Nam was off limits. A 16” round isn’t Precision Guided Ordinance. The first few rounds are fairly accurate, but as the guns heat, the accuracy gets worse. You could aim at the Hanoi Power Plant and take out a hospital, school, or POW camp. (The brass hats wouldn’t fund radar guided RAP rounds – no, they’d rather risk a multimillion dollar A-6 and a pilot who cost Uncle Sugar untold sums to train – but who am I to tell them what to do?) So NJ found herself supporting Operation Market Basket, gunfire support for troops under attack.

She slipped into the op area unannounced.

A FAC called for a fire mission from a small boy off the coast. A platoon of Marines was under attack from a mortar squad. The FAC had the mortar squad’s coordinates.

“Alfa Whiskey, this is Tango Golf two six. I have a fire mission. Coordinates Bravo Bravo Two Eight, Xray niner eight Foxrot. Over”

On Alfa Whiskey, the bridge to bridge circuit snapped, “Alfa Whiskey, this is Big Dog we’ll take this mission”. Then on the fire support circuit, “Tango Golf, Bravo Delta, roger. Confirm coordinates ‘Bravo Bravo Two Eight, Xray niner eight Foxrot’”.

“Bravo Bravo Two Eight, Xray niner eight Foxrot, roger. Fire one salvo for effect.”

“Bravo Delta, roger salvo.”

Well, a salvo from a Battleship is an entirely different thing than a salvo from a small boy with some 5”/38s.

Nine 16” HE rounds whistled over the small boy’s head from 20 miles away. They impacted the target area with such force that the mortar squad’s position was reduced to a smoking hole. The pressure from the impact spun the FAC’s plane around. He examined the effect of the navy’s effort once he reoriented himself for just a minute.

“Jesus Christ! What did you use? Target destroyed”, the FAC reported in a high pitched, girlish scream.

“Bravo Delta, Target destroyed. Roger, out”

It's been said that a soldier with fixed bayonet has a certain calming effect on belligerents. Well, the same can be said for a capital ship sitting at anchor in a belligerent nation's harbor.

An aircraft carrier with all those airplanes looks bad, but what's it going to do sitting there? It's got to go to sea, turn into the wind, and launch the sortie, which, a flotilla of fishing boats can cause a CANC EX without too much trouble.

A Battleship is another thing entirely. Even the duty dog catcher can envision that serenely anchored bad boy turning those three turrets with the nine 16" guns in his direction and letting loose with a salvo of baby killer sabots or HE rounds that would ruin his and his town's day for an eon or two.

A battleship has a certain calming effect on petty despots when it is detected off said depot's coast.

The Iowa class BBs were built to take a direct hit from the Japanese navy's biggest guns, 18 inchers on the Yamato which fired one ton shells. The class A armor in the Iowas' 'citadel' was 18" thick, and if the bridge got blown away, the CHENG could run the ship the ship from main control.

While the Yamato never came up against an Iowa class BB, it's worth mentioning that US Naval Air sent her to the bottom, dooming perhaps, all the big capital ships as effective surface combatants.

Or did it?

Stay tuned. Just as a note, the Jersey took a direct hit on her number one turret from a shore battery during her tour off Korea. While the round's shrapnel killed one of the crewmen, the damage to the ship was cleaned up during evening sweepers.

It's an amazing time to be alive in America. We're in a year of firsts in this presidential election: the first viable woman candidate; the first viable African-American candidate; and, a candidate who is the first front running freedom fighter over 70. The next president of America will be a first.

We won't truly be in an election of firsts, however, until we judge every candidate by where they stand. We won't arrive where we should be until we no longer talk about skin color or gender. Now that Barack Obama steps to the front of the Democratic field, we need to stop talking about his race, and start talking about his policies and his politics..

It's time America takes a closer and deeper look at Obama.

Some pundits are calling him the next John F. Kennedy. He's not. He's the next George McGovern. And it's time people learned the facts.

Because the truth is that Mr. Obama is the single most liberal senator in the entire U.S. Senate. He is more liberal than Ted Kennedy, Bernie Sanders, or Mrs. Clinton.

So why is Obama not behind in the polls?

Why? Because the press has dealt with him as if he were in a beauty pageant. Mr. Obama talks about getting past party, getting past red and blue, to lead the United States of America. But let's look at the more defined strokes of who he is underneath this superficial "beauty."

Then what about the issues? Like security?

Start with national security, since the president's most important duties are as commander-in-chief. Over the summer, Mr. Obama talked about invading Pakistan, a nation armed with nuclear weapons; meeting without preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who vows to destroy Israel and create another Holocaust; and Kim Jong II, who is murdering and starving his people, but emphasized that the nuclear option was off the table against terrorists - something no president has ever taken off the table since we created nuclear weapons in the 1940s.

Even Democrats who have worked in national security condemned all of those remarks. Mr. Obama is a foreign-policy novice who would put our national security at risk.

Then what about economic policy?

Next, consider economic policy. For all its faults, our health care system is the strongest in the world. And free trade agreements, created by Bill Clinton as well as President Bush, have made more goods more affordable so that even people of modest means can live a life that no one imagined a generation ago. Yet Mr. Obama promises to raise taxes on "the rich." How to fix Social Security? Raise taxes.

How to fix Medicare? Raise taxes. Prescription drugs? Raise taxes. Free college? Raise taxes. Socialize medicine? Raise taxes. His solution to everything is to have government take it over. Big Brother on steroids, funded by your paycheck.

What about social issues?

Mr. Obama had the audacity to open a stadium ra lly by saying, "All praise and glory to God!" but says that Christian leaders speaking for life and marriage have "hijacked" - hijacked - Christianity. He is pro-partial birth abortion, and promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who will rule any restriction on it unconstitutional. He espouses the abortion views of Margaret Sanger, one of the early advocates of racial cleansing. His spiritual leaders endorse homosexual marriage, and he is moving in that direction.

In Illinois, he refused to vote against a statewide ban - ban - on all handguns in the state. These are radical left, Hollywood, and San Francisco values, not Middle America values.

Look beyond the eloquence and veneer to the issues.

Mr. Obama could win if people don't start looking behind his veneer and flowery speeches. His vision of "bringing America together" means saying that those who disagree with his agenda for America are hijackers or warmongers. Uniting the country means adopting his liberal agenda and abandoning any conflicting beliefs.

But right now everyone is talking about how eloquent a speaker he is and - yes - they're talking about his race. Those should never be the factors on which we base our choice for president. Mr. Obama's radical agenda sets him far outside the American mainstream, to the left of Mrs. Clinton.

It's time to talk about the real Barack Obama. In an election of firsts, let's first make sure we elect the person who is qualified to be our president in a nuclear age during a global civilizational war.

Fundamental Misunderstanding/Bad Sir Hillary v. BHO

Re The Speech.

It occurs to me after reading the text again, and reading some of the critiques again, that BHO either doesn't understand the Constitution or is counting on the ignorance of the many who are all sweaty with passion over the 'vision' his speech stirred up in them.

Our Constitution does not discriminate. Contrary to his prime assertion, it is complete. It does not give permission to discriminate against anyone because of color, race, religion or sex. He said it's incomplete. Think of that my friends, "incomplete". Would he change it to accommodate Rev Wright's views? How would he change the Constitution to eliminate the racial divide he finds in America?

A brilliant speech would have said our constitution guarantees us all a swing at the ball. The impediments that government have put up that keep any of us from knocking the ball out of the park should be torn down. Let us tear them down together and give everyone of the chance to succeed or fail through our own effort and talent.

But no, he'll mandate success for some, I guess. Heaven help him if he tries to put it in the Constitution.

Follow up question: Sir Hillary's releasing some papers today. Do you think she sees the publicity accorded BHO over the chink in his armor and is hoping to get a little of her own by creating some controversy of her own, or does she think this will be the cache she needs to claim 'experience'?

In case you missed it on Drudge. Can any one tell me how this is not a step backwards? I feel like I'm back in the sixties. All we need is a few "Power to the people" black fists stabbing the air and some doped up hippies yelling "Up the establishment!" and we'll be there. BT “We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.” Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787. The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations. Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution – a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time. And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who were willing to do their part – through protests and struggle, on the streets and in the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience and always at great risk - to narrow that gap between the promise of our ideals and the reality of their time. This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this campaign – to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America. It’s a story that hasn’t made me the most conventional candidate. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts – that out of many, we are truly one. Throughout the first year of this campaign, against all predictions to the contrary, we saw how hungry the American people were for this message of unity. Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. In South Carolina, where the Confederate Flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of African Americans and white Americans. This is not to say that race has not been an issue in the campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either “too black” or “not black enough.” We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary. The press has scoured every exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and black, but black and brown as well. And yet, it has only been in the last couple of weeks that the discussion of race in this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn. On one end of the spectrum, we’ve heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in affirmative action; that it’s based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap. On the other end, we’ve heard my former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation; that rightly offend white and black alike. I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely – just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed. But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam. As such, Reverend Wright’s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems – two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all. Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way But the truth is, that isn’t all that I know of the man. The man I met more than twenty years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another; to care for the sick and lift up the poor. He is a man who served his country as a U.S. Marine; who has studied and lectured at some of the finest universities and seminaries in the country, and who for over thirty years led a church that serves the community by doing God’s work here on Earth – by housing the homeless, ministering to the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and prison ministries, and reaching out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS. In my first book, Dreams From My Father, I described the experience of my first service at Trinity: “People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend’s voice up into the rafters….And in that single note – hope! – I heard something else; at the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion’s den, Ezekiel’s field of dry bones. Those stories – of survival, and freedom, and hope – became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and more than black; in chronicling our journey, the stories and songs gave us a means to reclaim memories that we didn’t need to feel shame about…memories that all people might study and cherish – and with which we could start to rebuild.” That has been my experience at Trinity. Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety – the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity’s services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America. And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years. I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love. Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork. We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias. But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality. The fact is that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we’ve never really worked through – a part of our union that we have yet to perfect. And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American. Understanding this reality requires a reminder of how we arrived at this point. As William Faulkner once wrote, “The past isn’t dead and buried. In fact, it isn’t even past.” We do not need to recite here the history of racial injustice in this country. But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. Segregated schools were, and are, inferior schools; we still haven’t fixed them, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today’s black and white students. Legalized discrimination - where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from unions, or the police force, or fire departments – meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between black and white, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persists in so many of today’s urban and rural communities. A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one’s family, contributed to the erosion of black families – a problem that welfare policies for many years may have worsened. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods – parks for kids to play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pick-up and building code enforcement – all helped create a cycle of violence, blight and neglect that continue to haunt us. This is the reality in which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of his generation grew up. They came of age in the late fifties and early sixties, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted. What’s remarkable is not how many failed in the face of discrimination, but rather how many men and women overcame the odds; how many were able to make a way out of no way for those like me who would come after them. But for all those who scratched and clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn’t make it – those who were ultimately defeated, in one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations – those young men and increasingly young women who we see standing on street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for the future. Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Reverend Wright’s generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table. At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician’s own failings. And occasionally it finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright’s sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from solving real problems; it keeps us from squarely facing our own complicity in our condition, and prevents the African-American community from forging the alliances it needs to bring about real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races. In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race. Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one’s handed them anything, they’ve built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pension dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and feel their dreams slipping away; in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense. So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear that an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they’re told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time. Like the anger within the black community, these resentments aren’t always expressed in polite company. But they have helped shape the political landscape for at least a generation. Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan Coalition. Politicians routinely exploited fears of crime for their own electoral ends. Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism. Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices, and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding. This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own. But I have asserted a firm conviction – a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people – that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice is we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union. For the African-American community, that path means embracing the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding our particular grievances – for better health care, and better schools, and better jobs - to the larger aspirations of all Americans -- the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man whose been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for own lives – by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny. Ironically, this quintessentially American – and yes, conservative – notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright’s sermons. But what my former pastor too often failed to understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change. The profound mistake of Reverend Wright’s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country – a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black; Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old -- is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know -- what we have seen – is that America can change. That is true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope – the audacity to hope – for what we can and must achieve tomorrow. In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination - and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past - are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds – by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations. It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper. In the end, then, what is called for is nothing more, and nothing less, than what all the world’s great religions demand – that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother’s keeper, Scripture tells us. Let us be our sister’s keeper. Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and let our politics reflect that spirit as well. For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism. We can tackle race only as spectacle – as we did in the OJ trial – or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina - or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Reverend Wright’s sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she’s playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies. We can do that. But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we’ll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change. That is one option. Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, “Not this time.” This time we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native American children. This time we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can’t learn; that those kids who don’t look like us are somebody else’s problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time. This time we want to talk about how the lines in the Emergency Room are filled with whites and blacks and Hispanics who do not have health care; who don’t have the power on their own to overcome the special interests in Washington, but who can take them on if we do it together. This time we want to talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of every race, and the homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of life. This time we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn’t look like you might take your job; it’s that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit. This time we want to talk about the men and women of every color and creed who serve together, and fight together, and bleed together under the same proud flag. We want to talk about how to bring them home from a war that never should’ve been authorized and never should’ve been waged, and we want to talk about how we’ll show our patriotism by caring for them, and their families, and giving them the benefits they have earned. I would not be running for President if I didn’t believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation – the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election. There is one story in particularly that I’d like to leave you with today – a story I told when I had the great honor of speaking on Dr. King’s birthday at his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta. There is a young, twenty-three year old white woman named Ashley Baia who organized for our campaign in Florence, South Carolina. She had been working to organize a mostly African-American community since the beginning of this campaign, and one day she was at a roundtable discussion where everyone went around telling their story and why they were there. And Ashley said that when she was nine years old, her mother got cancer. And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to file for bankruptcy, and that’s when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom. She knew that food was one of their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and relish sandwiches. Because that was the cheapest way to eat. She did this for a year until her mom got better, and she told everyone at the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the millions of other children in the country who want and need to help their parents too. Now Ashley might have made a different choice. Perhaps somebody told her along the way that the source of her mother’s problems were blacks who were on welfare and too lazy to work, or Hispanics who were coming into the country illegally. But she didn’t. She sought out allies in her fight against injustice. Anyway, Ashley finishes her story and then goes around the room and asks everyone else why they’re supporting the campaign. They all have different stories and reasons. Many bring up a specific issue. And finally they come to this elderly black man who’s been sitting there quietly the entire time. And Ashley asks him why he’s there. And he does not bring up a specific issue. He does not say health care or the economy. He does not say education or the war. He does not say that he was there because of Barack Obama. He simply says to everyone in the room, “I am here because of Ashley.” “I’m here because of Ashley.” By itself, that single moment of recognition between that young white girl and that old black man is not enough. It is not enough to give health care to the sick, or jobs to the jobless, or education to our children. But it is where we start. It is where our union grows stronger. And as so many generations have come to realize over the course of the two-hundred and twenty one years since a band of patriots signed that document in Philadelphia, that is where the perfection begins. Sadly, Liberals have taught our children well - my generations elders would never allow the disrespect and language used by kids today who know they only have to scream loudly to get any adult arrested. There are also many Democrats who courageously switched political allegiance and became outspoken conservatives, including Charlton Heston, Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Bill Bennett, Phil Gramm, Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Richard Shelby.

Of course, a onetime Democrat also became the 20th century’s greatest champion of conservative philosophy: Ronald Wilson Reagan.

President Reagan said, “I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.” To the millions of Americans who followed him to the Republican Party, he said, “I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute, and then it feels great.”

And a footnote: I can list countless Americans who have moved from the ideological Left to the Right, but I am hard pressed to name a single established conservative who has moved Left.

Of Clinton, Ferraro said that the press "has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign."

The niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., has used an appearance at a Black History Month event in Washington, DC, to reject the claim that her famous uncle supported abortion rights for women.

Dr. Alveda King says although her uncle -- the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. -- accepted an award from Planned Parenthood in 1966, the abortion group had a "hidden agenda" at the time. "I don't want anybody to be confused by thinking that Dr. King could condone the violent death of the little babies, and the violent consequences that women suffer," King clarifies. "I'm post-abortive myself. I've suffered ... and it was a secret in my family for too long. And so now we’re here today to speak out on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. And during a news conference at the Family Research Council, Dr. Johnny Hunter, president of the Life Education and Resource Network, predicted that at some point in America abortion would be abolished, just like slavery and Jim Crow laws.

"The way of the wicked does not last forever, and that's why we get to celebrate Black History Month," says Hunter. "Because all throughout black history [there have] been blacks who have taken a stand no matter where the people were when they got here. By the time they left this earth, we were a little bit better off."

Hunter declared that in merely three days time in America, the abortion industry "kills more blacks than the KKK ever lynched."

Sharon Jasper has been victimized. Sharon Jasper has been rabidly wronged. She has become a Section 8 care case “the victim of ever changing public housing policies.Sharon Jasper has spent 57 of her 58 years dedicated to one cause and one cause only, and has nothing to show for her dedicated servitude. She has lived in Section 8 housing all but 1 of her 58 years. It was a legacy passed down from her parents who moved into Section 8 housing in 1949 when she was six months old. She has passed the legacy down to her children, but fears they may have to get jobs to pay for the utilities and deposits. She laments about her one year hiatus from the comfort of her Section 8 nirvana, ' I tried it for a year..you know, working and all. Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan says Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is the "hope of the entire world."

Associated Press reports that Farrakhan, addressing some 20,000 people Sunday at the annual "Saviours' Day" celebration in Chicago, never explicitly endorsed Obama but spent most of a nearly two-hour speech praising the Illinois senator. AP says Farrakhan compared Obama to Nation of Islam founder Fard Muhammad, who also had a white mother and black father. He suggested that Obama "could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall." According to the Chicago Tribune, Farrakhan spoke about the war in Iraq, the nation's economic problems, and the increase in natural disasters, saying the world was in a perilous state and Obama could help it recover. "This young man is the hope of the entire world that America will change and be a better place," he said. The Tribune reports that Obama's people moved quickly yesterday to try to downplay the praises of Farrakhan, who has a history of controversial remarks -- particularly regarding the Jewish people. The newspaper quotes Obama spokesman, Bill Burton, who said that "Senator Obama has been clear in his objections to Minister Farrakhan's past pronouncements and has not solicited the minister's support."

On the Larry Elder show today, Curtis Slywa played side by side cuts from Farrakhan and B-HO. "Hoodwinked" is what they both said we are, and hoodwinked is what we all will be if B-HO becomes Mr. President B-HO.
